Teachers and school administrators often talk about where to take their students on the “next field trip” and discuss locations, items of importance, historical sites, and more. We think everyone should add Philadelphia, PA to the list of possibilities!

Why A Philadelphia Field Trip?

There are so many ties to American history here, and many historical sites that are interwoven into the fabric and culture of our country, that a field trip to Philadelphia just makes sense.

While I won’t list ALL of the reasons here and now, let’s start the discussion with The Liberty Bell! The Liberty Bell is in Philadelphia, and this iconic symbol of freedom is as much a part of our history as the Tea Party is to Boston.

The Liberty Bell is now on display in the modern Liberty Bell Center, which is a museum and gallery all in one. Students can see the Liberty Bell, learn more about the events and history of it, watch a short film produced by the History Channel, and even look at x-rays of the bell and see the legendary crack and learn more about the historical significance of the bell.

Inside the Liberty Bell Center in Philadelphia - CREDIT: A. YEE FOR GPTMC

Along with the Liberty Bell, students can also visit other historical sites like the Betsy Ross House, Elfreth’s Alley, The Edgar Allen Poe National Historical Site, The National Constitution Center, and a number of museums and art galleries that are also important and relevant to Philadelphia and American history.
